Joanna has over nineteen years of experience in the insurance industry. After graduating with a B.A. in Public Relations from the University of Toledo, she began her career at Progressive, starting in Personal Lines’ Customer Service. She moved to Progressive’s Professional Liability Group, where she has had multiple responsibilities, including coordinating underwriting, sales and marketing activities. Having been with ABA Insurance Services since its transition in 2010 from Progressive, she is currently a Junior Underwriter for the P&C Program.
Joanna Barney is the mother for two sons, Josh (9) and Noah (6). She loves the Cleveland sports teams and often attends Cleveland Browns games with her mom. And yes... "There is always next year!" When she is not at work you can find her at home helping her children with homework and often at the Lego Store checking out the latest sets. She supports local charities like Autism Speaks and Flashes of Hope. She and her husband Josh enjoy trying out new restaurants in Cleveland. In the summer, you will most likely find her on the beach or at a concert!
Dawn graduated from Hocking College in 1992 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Business. After graduating, she worked in the Hotel Industry as Front Desk Clerk, Night Auditor, and Front Desk Supervisor for almost 4 years before joining Progressive Insurance in 1995 as an Administrative Assistant.
Dawn is married and mom to a handsome son. In Dawn’s spare time, she enjoys spending time with her beautiful family including swimming, traveling, or just spending quiet time together. She is an avid animal lover who loves spending time with their Labrador retrievers, cats, and of course, can't forget the fish.
After teaching Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten for 10 years and raising 3 children, Ann was ready for a new challenge. She joined the Professional Liability Group of Progressive in 2005 as an Administrative Assistant and subsequently moved on to an Underwriting Assistant position. Ann has a B.A. degree in Early Childhood Education from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA.
Ann and her husband Tom have 3 terrific children, 2 in college and 1 in high school. In her spare time, Ann participates in Barre, and helps her husband run Rustic Regency, their antique and custom furniture business. An avid lacrosse fan and former college player, in the spring, you will find Ann on the sidelines of her high school son’s lacrosse games cheering at the top of her lungs!
||Complex Account Manager
Jason graduated with a BA from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio and has over twenty years of experience in banking and insurance. Currently a Complex Account Manager responsible for wide a territory over various New England, Midwest and Southern States, Jason has served in other roles with the company including Senior Underwriter and Senior Account Executive. Prior to joining the program, Jason spent five years at Bank One and Chubb.
Married with children, Jason rides his bike or swims in his spare time, which is usually limited to lunch time during the week, He enjoys vacations on the beach or the mountains. His role model in life, other than his mother, is the legendary basketball coach John Wooden.
|Richard G. Flenner Jr.
||Western Region Business Development Manager
Richard has over 35 years of marketing and sales experience in insurance. He is currently responsible for sales and new business development. His broad territory comprises all states west of the Mississippi River, including Illinois. Richard received his MBA from Cleveland State University and his B.S. from West Chester University. Before joining the Program, Richard was Territory Manager for Universal Underwriters Insurance.
Richard and his family are active supporters of the arts. Having been a classically trained musician prior to entering insurance, Richard spends much of his spare time singing in various church choirs, and attending various plays and classical music concerts in the greater Cleveland area. He has been blessed to be married to his wife, Dana, for 32 years, and a father of two artistic daughters. One daughter is a graphic artist and the other is a theater major in college. Having finally paid his last college bill, Richard looks forward to spending more time gardening and enjoying his other passion, reading books on history.
John Graham has over twenty-four years of underwriting and banking experience including ten years of experience underwriting Professional Liability products for publicly traded companies at Genesis Professional Liability Managers, four years as a Marketing Account Manager for Life Equity and two years at Progressive in the Professional Liability Group as Onsite Review Manager. John understands the challenges of community banks. After graduating from Bowling Green State University, John worked in retail and commercial banking at regional banks in Ohio for over eight years.
John and his wife Karen, a teacher of nearly 30 years, have enjoyed watching their 3 children participate in their many scholastic and athletic endeavors over the years. They have a son who is a junior at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, a senior daughter who will be attending college in the fall, and a freshman son who is actively involved in high school sports.
||P&C Product Manager
Dirk joined ABA Insurance Services in 2012 as the P&C Product Manager. With over 15 years in the insurance industry, Dirk’s extensive career includes underwriting with management responsibilities at OnPoint Underwriting, Travelers, Kemper and Fireman’s Fund insurance companies. Dirk earned his BS in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dirk is an avid sports enthusiast, either as a spectator or participant. His main sport of interest is tennis, as evidenced by the colorful shirt in the photo. He also plays a mean game of ping pong and is the proud co-champion of two ABA Insurance Services table tennis tournaments as well as two department corn hole tourneys. Off the playing field, Dirk has an extensive music and video collection that he enjoys (don’t even THINK of burglarizing his home). Dirk relocated from Colorado to Cleveland two years ago (don’t ask) but so far has not become a Browns fan. (These things take time.)
Crystal joined the business in its infancy in 1987. Diligently serving in a support capacity over those 28 years, it is safe to say that Crystal has done it all: filing, faxing, copying, making spreadsheets, entering data, opening and sorting incoming mail and cash receipts, answering multiple phone lines and emails, and setting up underwriting files. Crystal is a dedicated, hard-working, team player who has shown the flexibility to work effectively on a number of underwriting teams and territories. She has embraced new ideas and processes and her ability to work in a fast paced environment is one of the reasons our company is able to consistently meet customer deadlines and exceed customer expectations. With her quick smile, joyful laughter and caring personality, Crystal makes ABA Insurance Services a better place to work.
During Crystal's personal time she is an avid roller skater, for over 42 years. The love of roller-skating keeps her in shape. Crystal also enjoys decorating her home. She has learned to paint, put down flooring “tile” and finished her first back splash project. When not creating new projects around her home, she loves to go to amusement parks and carnivals. Crystal has one daughter and a loving husband and enjoys taking care of her first grand-son.
||Complex Account Manager
Joe attended John Carroll University and graduated with a major in Finance and a minor in Economics in 1996. He later earned his MBA from John Carroll University in 2003. Prior to joining the program in 2005, Joe spent over eight years in banking with US Bank. During this time, he spent five years as a branch manager on the east side of Cleveland. Later Joe was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Private Banking where he assisted high net worth clients with lending and investment needs. While at US Bank, Joe served as President of the Development Network Board, was a member of the Management Advisory Counsel and was a top Pinnacle Sales Award winner multiple times.
Joe grew up in the Dayton area of Ohio in a suburb called Centerville. His family owned a restaurant called Jay’s Seafood Restaurant that is still operating in the Oregon District of downtown Dayton today. Joe attend college at John Carroll University and stayed in the Cleveland area after graduating. He is married and has three children (11, 8 and 4). Joe is always involved with sports whether it be playing, watching or coaching his kids teams. He also enjoys gardening and vacations which include a beach.
||Senior Administrative Assistant
Chris has grown up with this group, beginning her career in 1986. She is currently the highest tenured employee of the group. Chris has essentially performed any and all of the numerous support activities necessary to keep the business performing at a high level such as: filing, faxing, copying, making spreadsheets, entering data, opening and sorting incoming mail and cash receipts, answering multiple phone lines and emails, and setting up underwriting files. Chris is a team player who is quick to lend a hand and frequently volunteers to assist her colleagues. She embraces the value of great service and the need to consistently meet customer deadlines and exceed customer expectations.
Chris and her family are highly involved with their church, especially 11 years as a Festival Committee member and runs the Bake Shop for St. Justin Martyr Parish and is involved with Boulevard of 500 Flags in Eastlake, Ohio for current and past Veterans to raise money to refurbish the flags. Chris is married and has two children. Her daughter is currently in college and the son in high school.
||Complex Account Manager
Tom has over 23 years jointly with ABA Insurance Services and Progressive, specializing in on-site reviews and underwriting complex accounts. He graduated from Bucknell University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and earned his MBA from Miami University in Management/Finance. Prior to joining Progressive, Tom was a corporate loan review officer at BankOne and an Assistant Vice President at the Society Corp. in loan review and problem loan work-out.
Tom and his family are definitely sports enthusiasts. He has coached youth football for over 10 years and enjoys watching his kids play in numerous other sports including basketball and lacrosse. Tom is married with 3 boys. His favorite activities include playing golf with his boys and wife, getting together with family at Browns games and various Cleveland eateries, and traveling with his family. Tom’s sporting highlight last summer was his first ever hole in one!
||Bank Program Director
Lisa graduated cum laude from Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Finance. Prior to joining ABA Insurance Services, Lisa worked for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) as an Assistant National Bank Examiner. Lisa joined Progressive as an Underwriter in 1987 and assumed Underwriting Manager responsibilities in 1990.
Lisa has four children and three beautiful grandchildren who are her pride and joy. Lisa is HUGE sports fan of all Pittsburgh teams, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. She is fond of noting their six super bowl wins when challenged by other fans, which unfortunately for them, seems to occur often. Her alma mater, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Notre Dame fighting Irish are also very close to her heart. In what’s left of her spare time, Lisa enjoys reading and travel and recently returned from an anniversary cruise to Europe!
Originally a hotel manager, Eric joined the ABA Insurance Services team in 2012 after spending a year with Progressive in the Personal Lines division. As an Underwriting Assistant, Eric handles accounts in the Eastern United States for our Professional Liability & Bond lines, as well as all states for STAMP Medallion, broker and excess lines.
Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Eric attended Ohio University where he ran on the varsity track team, also serving simultaneously in the Army ROTC and Ohio Army National Guard. He keeps busy outside of the office by playing competitive volleyball, riding motorcycles, enjoying the food and beverage scene in Cleveland and spoiling his three young nieces. Eric is also a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sister of Great Cleveland program, aiding his Little in achieving the goal of playing college basketball.

Ann earned her BS from Ursuline College and has been a commercial lines underwriter for over twenty-five years, including eight years underwriting Environmental Liability, Business Auto, General Liability, Workers Compensation and Umbrella/Excess coverages at American International Group. As a Complex Account Manager for the ABA Insurance Program, she currently focuses on our more complex accounts and on managing top producing agency relationships for the Program.
Michael joined Progressive in 1987, as an underwriter for California, Texas and New England. He was promoted to On-Site Review Manager in 1989 and Senior Loss Control Manager in 2010. In addition, Michael heads up the Brokerage Division for ABA Insurance Services, which offers Excess D&O, Side A DIC, and excess FIB. Michael's prior experience includes two years as Loan Review Officer with BancOne Cleveland and six years as National Bank Examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Mike received his B.S.B.A., with a major in Finance from John Carroll University in 1979. He also received his graduate degree in banking from Stonier in 1994.
Michael is an avid cyclist and hiker. Michael can often been seen at lunch time grinding up the “Old Mill” hill trying to keep up with the younger riders in the office. Michael and his wife have taken several tandem biking trips around the world with other tandem riders. Most recently Michael and his wife were seen leading the “epic ride” in Croatia.

Bill has been with the Program for over twenty years, starting as an underwriter with Progressive after graduate school. He earned his B.S. in Finance from the University of Dayton and MBA from Kent State University. In order to better serve his customers, Bill also obtained the designation of Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU). As a Complex Account Manager, Bill primarily focuses on the unique exposures relative to large financial institutions (> $1 billion) in assets, key agency relationships and new business development.
Bill is married and the father of four great kids. Two are in grade school and two are in high school. The oldest will soon start college. Together they enjoy watching sports, especially high school football and basketball. Bill has been a youth football and basketball coach for nearly 10 years. He enjoys hiking with his wife and reading history, especially biographies. He hopes to someday take his family on a long trip out West to Montana and Wyoming.
||P&C Senior Underwriter
With over 10 years in the insurance industry, Christine began her insurance career in the compliance department of Progressive’s Professional Liability Group. She assumed responsibilities as an underwriter and STAMP Program Administrator before moving into her current role as the lead for the Mortgage Protection Program and an underwriter for the ABA endorsed P&C program. Prior to her insurance career, Christine was a project manager for a materials company after earning her B.A. from Miami University (Ohio).
Christine enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, playing games and reading. She has been married to her lifelong friend, Ron, for over 25 years and they have four energetic sons. She enjoys skiing and hiking in the off-season. Christine has lived in Australia and Rwanda. She and her family continue to explore the states and around the world thanks in part to a favorite book, A Thousand Places to See Before You Die, which inspires her to continue her quest to visit every state and continent.

Todd joined the Program in 2001 as a Senior Underwriter, and is currently responsible for states in the Mid-Western and Western portion of the country. Todd is also beginning to take on some of the Program’s P&C underwriting responsibilities. Prior to joining the Program, he worked as a Small Business and Middle Market Commercial Lender for Bank One, Key Bank, and First Merit Bank. He earned his BSBA from Youngstown State University and his MBA from Cleveland State University.
Todd is married and the proud father of two sons. His passion encompasses working out, coaching football, travel, and volunteering at church and in the community. He is currently a mentor for Closing the Achievement Gap (CTAG), on the Board of the Diabetes Partnership of Greater Cleveland, and a regular volunteer at the Cleveland Food Bank. He is the past Chairman for Learning About Business (LAB)

Jim is a Senior Underwriter whose territory covers Ohio, Florida, New York, Missouri and Montana. Jim is a seasoned veteran that joined the business in 1989 after previously working as a bank examiner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He earned his Masters of Business Administration from John Carroll University; his undergraduate degree from the University of Toledo, and maintains the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.
Jim and his wife spend many hours watching (and having watched) their two (college and high school aged) sons on the basketball court. Jim is an active fan of the outdoors, with great interests in biking, birding, hiking, swimming and cross-country skiing. Other off-hour interests include travel to national parks and national wildlife refuges and reading (nonfiction and investing).

||Eastern Region Business Development Manager
With over 25 years in the insurance industry, Pat was formerly with Zurich Insurance for fourteen years, first as a Financial Services Executive and then as a Regional Practice Leader for the Northeast and MidAtlantic regions. Previously, she was with Kemper National Insurance and Aetna Casualty & Surety. Pat earned her BS in Mass Communications from Towson University.
Pat has a love for fitness and spends as much time as possible outdoors or traveling and exploring with her favorite explorers, her teenage daughter and two dogs. Her other passion is mentoring young girls in leadership. In her 9th year as a girl scout leader, Pat inspires her scouts to volunteer as much as possible to serve their community, be independent thinkers, to always lead by their example, and to achieve the pinnacle in girl scouting- their gold award.
